York Catholic Students Continue to Beat Provincial Averages on EQAO and OSSLT Results

According to the latest results from the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) students outpace their provincial peers in all areas of testing.

“We are very proud of our students and staff for the high level of achievement they consistently demonstrate throughout the school year,” says Domenic Scuglia, YCDSB Director of Education. “There is always more work to be done, but this is a time to celebrate the hard work of the students, family and staff that led to these province-leading results.”

Below are the Board and provincial averages for each area of testing.

Test Board Average  Provincial Average
Grade 3 Reading 82.2 72.6
Grade 3 Writing 78.5 65.5
Grade 3 Math 69.7 59.7
Grade 6 Reading 90.6 83.7
Grade 6 Writing 93.0 83.6
Grade 6 Math 58.1 49.5
Grade 9 Math 68.1 53.7
Grade 10 Literacy Assessment 90.1 84.7

Reading and Writing continue to be strong areas of achievement at YCDSB, especially in Grade 6, with 91 and 93 percent respectively, of Grade 6 students meeting or exceeding provincial standards, compared to 84 percent provincially.

“Thank you to all YCDSB staff, students and families for taking a faith-filled and rigorous approach to student success,” said Frank Alexander, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “Data, such as EQAO scores, helps us create an overall plan that ensures every single one of our students is succeeding, which has to be our goal as a Catholic school board.”

Grade 3, 6 and 9 EQAO results reflect the average of all in-person fully participating students who met or exceeded provincial expectations. It does not include students who provided no data due to absence, medical reasons, etc. Students enrolled in remote-learning classrooms were excluded from participating in the EQAO assessments unless they attended in-person for the assessment.

In 2023, 97 percent of our Grade 3 students and 97 percent of our Grade 6 students participated in the EQAO assessments. 93 percent of our Grade 9 students participated in the math assessment. 97 percent of our students eligible to take the Literacy Test for the first time participated. Successful completion of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test is one of 32 requirements students must meet to graduate and obtain a high school diploma.
